Supermarkets (15-06-2000):
Iceland, is of course, in the news for having "gone organic", but how are the
other supermarkets doing on the battlefield? A brief scan of their websites revealed:
Waitrose has "just" retained
its "Organic Supermarket of the Year" title, as voted for by readers of the Mail
on Sunday's YOU magazine. In 1999. It claims it pioneered organics 16 years ago.
It offers a delivery service (the first supermarket to do so) and provides support
for farmers converting to organic.
The Tesco website is surprisingly
quiet on the subject, although it has publicly derided the Iceland move as insignificant.
Sainsbury's is
far more positive about organics, having opened an organic shop in its Merton
branch and showing a good deal of information, especially on its new
organic site.
Asda's website has on mention
whatsoever of organic food.
Safeway claims that it was
the first major supermarket to introduce organic produce, in 1981. Its information
is, however, short on content.
